Sonia Zapata, DPT, MTC

Sonia Zapata was raised in Santa Clarita, which is where she attended local schools including Saugus and Canyon High School. Prior to graduating high school, she ran track and was an avid softball player which ultimately led to her earning a 4-year scholarship to play Division 1 softball at Long Island University.
In 2006 Sonia Zapata earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical therapy from Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. She recently earned her doctorate in physical therapy from Evidence in Motion. In addition, she obtained a Manual Therapy Certification which expands her hands-on and diagnostic skills.
Over the course of her physical therapy career, Sonia has specialized in neurological rehabilitation treating patients who have suffered from traumatic brain injuries (TBI), spinal cord injuries, and stroke. She focused on these rewarding areas for many years prior to treating patients in orthopedics and sports medicine.
An Active Athlete & Fitness Enthusiast
Sonia leads a very active lifestyle and true to her competitive nature, she has completed two half marathons and five triathlons. In 2012, she discovered Crossfit, which further ignited her passion for competitive fitness. It was her personal experiences with Crossfit which inspired her to begin working with other athletes in sports medicine. She became a Crossfit level 1 certified trainer and went on to coach for 3 years at Crossfit Second Nature.
She specializes in myofascial release, Kinesio Taping, and assessment of movement pattern dysfunction. Sonia is also Rock Tape certified.
In her free time, Sonia enjoys going to the gym, hiking, traveling, and spending weekends at the beach. As a Santa Clarita native and devoted athlete in her own right, Sonia enjoys connecting with local athletes and patients that walk through our door. With a passion for fitness and helping our patients so they can be their best, Sonia is an inspiring part of our family at Valencia Sports Medicine.
