Sonia Zapata earned her master’s degree in physical therapy from Long Island University-Brooklyn, in Brooklyn, New York. Since graduating from LIU Brooklyn in 2006, she has been practicing physical therapy for 8 years.
Sonia was raised in Santa Clarita, which is where she attended local schools including Saugus and Canyon High School. Prior to graduating high school, she ran track and was an avid softball player which ultimately led to her earning a 4-year scholarship to play Division 1 softball at Long Island University.
Over the course of her physical therapy career, Sonia has specialized in neurological rehabilitation and treating patients who have suffered from traumatic brain injuries (TBI), spinal cord injuries, and stroke. She focused on these rewarding areas for many years prior to treating patients in orthopedics and sports medicine.
Sonia leads a very active lifestyle and true to her competitive nature, she has completed two half marathons and five triathlons. In 2012, she discovered CrossFit, which further ignited her passion for competitive fitness. It was her personal experiences with CrossFit which inspired her to begin working with other athletes in sports medicine.
She specializes in Myofascial release, Kinesio Taping®, and assessment of movement pattern dysfunction. Sonia is also Rock Tape certified, a CrossFit Level 1 certified trainer, and a coach at CrossFit Second Nature, located in Newhall.
As a Santa Clarita native and devoted athlete in her own right, Sonia enjoys connecting with local athletes and patients that walk through our door. With a passion for fitness and helping our patients so they can be their best, Sonia is an inspiring addition to our family at Valencia Sports Medicine.
